I am a strong advocate for patient-centric care and a volunteer supporting Ms. Robin Shapiro who has just authored a new book, “The Secret Language of Health Care”. Available on amazon.com, Oct 16. She is the founder of WASHAA, WA. State Health Advocacy Association.

I contributed a chapter to the book. Here is what she wrote about my story. There is no exaggeration about what I experienced. This is the first paragraph of the chapter.

“I met Judy Cushman in the early 1990s when I was working at the biotechnology company, Immunex. She worked in executive search for biotechnology and other corporate clients in the Seattle area and nationally.

We recently reconnected after her sister’s death when Judy developed an interest in the field of health advocacy. She shared a recent personal story about an eye procedure that she had, pointing out that even a savvy, intelligent, engaged patient like she is, can learn additional questions to ask before a potentially costly surgery. What she didn’t know beforehand was that when you pick certain doctors or locations for surgery, the cost can vary extraordinarily.”
